The S scale model train was introduced in 1896. The S scale model was credited to Edward Bowness who was just 14 years old when he designed the model train (which was partly made of cards) for a model train competition. But it only became commercially available during the 20s in Europe and popularized by American Flyer during the 30s and Lionel during the later decades. It was only in 1980 that new companies for S scale model train came out with different models and sturdier components as different S scale model trains now came as brass.

This type of model train is better known as a toy because of its sturdiness which could be handled by children. However, that didn’t diminish the reputation of the S scale model train for its detailing and quality. Currently, the most popular S scale model trains are issued by Lionel while the collectible model trains of this scale were manufactured by American Flyer. Although S Scale is the oldest model scale, it’s still one of the most sought after model scale because of its size, durability and quality.
